Temple of Heaven is not one building. It is a large park containing the famous ceremonial monuments, and the basic park ticket does not necessarily cover every landmark travelers expect to see.
For a first visit, the easiest decision is to buy the combined ticket, enter from a gate that fits your route, and walk the ceremonial axis without rushing.
Quick answer
Allow two to three hours and buy the combo ticket if you want the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Echo Wall, and Circular Mound Altar. The park grounds stay open longer than the separately ticketed monuments, and some paid sites close on Mondays except public holidays.

Choose the right Temple of Heaven ticket
The park admission and the ticket for its main ceremonial sites are different products. If the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the image that brought you here, choose the combined ticket rather than the basic gate ticket.
Official Beijing guidance currently lists both online and on-site purchasing for municipal parks. Online real-name verification can require a mainland Chinese phone number, while comprehensive service windows can assist visitors carrying valid passports. Confirm the current method before your date.
A simple route for first-time visitors
- Enter at the East Gate for the most convenient subway connection on Line 5.
- Walk toward the Long Corridor and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
- Continue south along the Danbi Bridge ceremonial axis.
- Visit the Imperial Vault of Heaven and Echo Wall before the Circular Mound Altar.
- Exit from the South Gate if you want a one-way visit instead of retracing your steps.
Opening hours are layered
The outer park, the paid monuments, and the ticket windows can have different closing times. Official guidance also states that separately charged scenic sites may close on Mondays except statutory holidays. Check the day-specific notice if a monument is essential to you.
Early morning is best for seeing local exercise and park life. Later in the day, protect enough time to reach the paid monuments before their last admission rather than using the park’s later closing time as your deadline.
Published hours and prices can change for seasons, holidays, and special events. Use the official visitor page as the final source.
What pairs well nearby
- Qianmen and Dashilar for historic streets and food after a south-gate exit.
- Tiananmen Square only if you already hold the required reservation and allow security time.
- The National Museum on a separate half day if you want to avoid museum fatigue.
- A relaxed evening around Wangfujing rather than another large imperial park.
