The large lake park sits beside Nanjing’s wall and Purple Mountain views, but its many gates and islands make a defined start and finish essential.

For foreign visitors, the useful plan is not only what to see but which entrance, identity document, transport connection and exit make the visit work. Save “玄武湖公园” in Chinese before leaving your hotel.

Quick answer

Choose Xuanwumen Gate for the classic causeway or Taicheng for wall and skyline views, then walk only one or two islands instead of trying to cover the entire lake.

Tickets, reservations and passport checks for Xuanwu Lake

General park access is normally free. Boats, wall sections, exhibitions and seasonal events are separate products.

Check the official channel for your exact date and choose passport as the identity type when real-name booking is required. Keep the confirmation, admission window and entrance instructions available offline.

A broad Xuanwu Lake pickup pin can be several kilometers from your actual gate. Save the Chinese gate name.

A practical route through Xuanwu Lake

  • Enter through Xuanwumen or the selected gate.
  • Walk the causeway toward the first island.
  • Choose one continuous lake-edge route.
  • Use a boat only after confirming return pier and weather.
  • Exit near metro, Jiming Temple or Taicheng wall.

How to fit Xuanwu Lake into a Nanjing itinerary

Combine with Jiming Temple and the Taicheng wall section for a compact central-north day.

Early morning and sunset are comfortable; blossom seasons bring concentrated crowds.

Keep a workable backup

  • Walk one causeway only.
  • Skip boats in strong wind or rain.
  • Use Nanjing Museum as an indoor weather backup.

Can foreign visitors enter Xuanwu Lake with a passport?

Major Nanjing attractions generally support valid foreign passports, but the sales channel and gate workflow vary. Bring the original passport used for any real-name booking.
