Sunlight Rock Gulangyu: Tickets, Stairs and Best Time
日光岩
Climb Gulangyu’s Sunlight Rock with ticket advice, steep-stair warnings, crowd timing, viewpoints and an efficient island route.
- Allow
- 1.5–2 hours
- Ticket
- Paid admission or island pass
- Access
- Walk from Gulangyu ferry piers
- Bring
- Water and grippy shoes
Sunlight Rock gives the island’s broadest panorama, but the compact summit and steep approach can create queues disproportionate to the visit length.
For foreign visitors, the useful plan is not only what to see but which entrance, identity document, transport connection and exit make the visit work. Save “日光岩” in Chinese before leaving your hotel.
Quick answer
Go early or late, climb through the temple and rock paths to the summit, and expect a narrow final staircase where temporary one-way crowd controls may apply.

Tickets, reservations and passport checks for Sunlight Rock
Check whether the current single-site ticket or multi-attraction pass fits your route and whether passport purchase is supported online or at the gate.
Check the official channel for your exact date and choose passport as the identity type when real-name booking is required. Keep the confirmation, admission window and entrance instructions available offline.
A Gulangyu ferry ticket does not automatically include Sunlight Rock. Avoid buying a bundle unless you can realistically visit its included sites.
A practical route through Sunlight Rock
- Walk from the ferry through the historic lanes.
- Enter the signed scenic gate.
- Pass the temple and shaded lower rock paths.
- Climb the final narrow section only when comfortable.
- Descend toward Shuzhuang Garden or the coast.
How to fit Sunlight Rock into a Xiamen itinerary
Pair with Shuzhuang Garden and the southern coast rather than crossing the island repeatedly.
Early morning is coolest; sunset is beautiful but leaves less margin for the return ferry.
Keep a workable backup
- Use lower viewpoints when the summit is crowded.
- Skip the climb in thunderstorms or extreme heat.
- Choose Shuzhuang Garden for a gentler scenic alternative.

Plan My Xiamen TripFrequently asked questions
Is Sunlight Rock difficult to climb?
The overall climb is short but includes steep, uneven and narrow stairs near the summit. Take it slowly and avoid the final section if conditions feel unsafe.
Can foreign visitors enter Sunlight Rock with a passport?
Major Xiamen attractions generally support valid foreign passports, but the sales channel and gate workflow vary. Bring the original passport used for any real-name booking.
How much time should I allow for Sunlight Rock?
Plan about 1.5–2 hours, plus transport, security and queues. Mountain, river and outlying attractions need extra buffer for weather and internal transfers.
