Plate and pickup pin

Chengdu is easiest when metro and ride-hailing are used together. The metro handles most central journeys; DiDi is valuable for luggage, late evenings, outlying sights and addresses far from a station.

The recurring problem is not the ride itself but selecting the correct entrance, exit or pickup point. A destination pin without the correct gate can place you on the wrong side of a large complex.

Quick answer

Use the metro for predictable journeys and DiDi for difficult final connections. Save destinations in Chinese, verify station exits and compare the vehicle plate before entering any ride.

Using public transport in Chengdu

  • Use the metro for central Chengdu, Panda Avenue and major rail stations.
  • Use high-speed rail plus local transfer for Leshan, Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng.
  • Save exact gates for Wuhou Shrine, panda facilities and large museums.
  • Confirm TFU versus CTU before every airport journey.

How to avoid a failed DiDi pickup

  • Choose a named gate, hotel lobby or legal roadside pickup rather than dropping a pin in a complex.
  • Send a screenshot of the vehicle plate and driver message when communication is unclear.
  • Stand on the correct side of divided roads and do not cross traffic after the driver arrives.
  • Keep a metro or official taxi backup when demand, weather or road controls delay the car.

Payment and connectivity preparation

Set up mobile data and your preferred payment method before the first journey. Test the app while you still have hotel Wi-Fi and save a screenshot of your hotel address.

Transit features and accepted payment methods can change. Keep a small cash reserve and know the staffed service-point option at major stations.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners use the Chengdu metro?

Yes. Ticket machines, staffed service points and supported mobile payment or transit options make the system usable for international visitors.

Does DiDi work in English?

An international or translated interface is commonly available through supported apps, but driver messages and pickup instructions may still be in Chinese.

Should I use taxis instead of DiDi?

Official taxis are a useful backup. Keep the destination in Chinese and make sure the meter is used.
